we were very fortunate, to have acquired this historical and most interesting suit of armor. the rare KAWARI type KABUTO (helmet) is of the "tsuinari" (acorn) style. It is circa 1624 AD, with 62 plates, and from the Saotome School. it is signed; "hitachi ju kagetomo iyetada" (province, and maker), he was one of the founders of the saotome school. This suit is very similar (type of KABUTO, and color of the lacing) to the suit worn by, the chief daimyo of "Bungo" province "Otomo Sorin" (a feudal lord, serving "tokugawa IEYASU") from 1530-1587.  duplicate, or "look alike" armor was normally worn to confuse ones advisory, regarding the identity of the daimyo. hand made Reproductions of his suit are selling for around $25,000 today.

there is a significant amount of written history regarding "Otomo", and his involvement in many famous battles.  In 1564, Otomo was forced to stop a rebellion by akizuki of chikuzen.  Then in 1568, he started a battle against ryuozji of HIZEN, which unfortunately prompted the mori clan to come after him.  otomo then lost the battle of tatarhama and lost the tachibana castle to the mori clan.  by this time, otomo had taken control of Bungo, most of buzen, chikuzen, chikugo, and had a large amount of control over higo and HIZEN.  people were even flying otomo banners in iyo, which had been taken from the very hostile kono clan.  Otomo Sorin had become a great and mighty daimyo and led a powerful clan. Otomo was highly accomplished for his short life span of just 57 years.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ST FRANCIS XAVIER AND THE DAIMYO OTOMO SUBSTANTIATES THAT THE CHARACTER "YABU SAMA" IN SHOGUN, REPRESENTED OTOMO SORIN. Wm. ADAMS (anjin san, in the movie shogun) LANDED THE ERASMUS (HIS SHIP) IN BUNGO PROVINCE, DURING THE YEAR 1600 AD. OTOMO WAS THE DAIMYO OF BUNGO (SERVING UNDER TOKUGAWA IEYASU, THE LORD OF THE EIGHT PROVINCES). SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER, SENT THE DATA BELOW TO TOKUGAWA IEYASU ABOUT THE CAPTURE OF Wm. ADAMS, AND HIS SHIP. THIS ARMOR WAS THE PROPERTY OF A HIGH RANKING RETAINER TO OTOMO. THE ARMOR BEARS HIS CREST KAJI-NO-HA (OAK LEAF CREST) AND THE CREST OF THE DAIMYO OTOMO ON THE BOX (AS IS PROPER).

Otomo became a Christian and was befriended by St. Francis Xavier. St. Francis first met Otomo Sorin in Oita (CITY) Bungo (PROVINCE) during his passage from Kagoshima to Yamaguchi in the fall of 1551. This first meeting was just after Otomo Sorin had inherited HIS DOMAIN AND THE leadership FROM HIS Daimyo, due to the death of his father. HE was just 22 years of age at the time. On the occasion of this first meeting St. Francis was traveling through Bungo on his way back from Yamaguchi having visited Kyoto to meet with the Emperor. Xavier was in Bungo to meet with the Portuguese ships to collect mail and provisions from Rome. saint Francis created a missionary station, and assisted Otomo in establishing trade with the Portuguese. this was very lucrative for Otomo, and served the needs of the church quite well. For Xavier the meeting with Otomo Sorin was a political necessity as it was customary for foreigners to meet with the local rulers to explain their need to be in their territories, and to explain the nature of their activities. Otomo Sorin's motivation for meeting with Xavier was to determine of what assistance Xavier could be in helping him establish trading relationships with the Portuguese. St. Francis and the influence of his missionaries would eventually lead to establishing Bungo as one of the leading Christian Provinces in Japan. Otomo Sorin honored Xavier's need to meet the incoming Portuguese ships and would later send correspondence to him in Yamaguchi to inform him of the arrival of additional Portuguese ships to his port.  both otomo, and st. Francis, played significant roles in the venture's of wm. adams, which had a very important effect on the history of japan
